This poster design was done for the band The District Attorneys to advertise their participation in the Savannah Stopover Music Festival. I was given a large amount of freedom from the band members I talked with, namely Drew Beskin. He suggested several concepts to work with and let me run with it from there. The band very much liked the idea of a vintage-inspired approach that was influenced by Americana. I was given several options for subject matter, and I eventually chose the Rocket because I thought it would be an interesting and dynamic image to use that could be integrated with the type in a visually appealing way.
For the style of the illustration I decided to push the graphic elements to create a kind of posterized look inspired by graphic illustrations from the Atomic Age. I added a textured look and used a slightly toned-down color palette to lighten the weight of the poster overall, as well as to evoke a sense of Americana (which is often associated with heavy texturization and aging). I wanted to use a combination of sweeping curves and straight lines to create an upward motion because I felt that the uplifting, nostalgic nature of the symbol would tie nicely into the band’s musical sound.
Overall I really enjoy the nostalgic energy of the final poster.
